Trend Alert: Square Shag

Looking for change in 2010? We’ve singled out a hot new cut that models and celebs alike are sporting: a modern take on the shag. We even took it for a test-drive and are happy to report, it works in real life as well as it does on the runway.

I wear a nice, slightly layered bob haircut. It’s soft and feminine but it fails to leave an impression and in fact, I fear it makes me look too, “nice.” Yes, there are worse impressions a haircut can leave but it’s a new year and change seems appropriate.

When I confide to my friend and stylist Eric Himel that I want to try something different, he immediately picks up his phone. “Go see Patricia at Maxine’s. I’m calling to make you an appointment right now,” he says.

When Eric and I meet Patricia Arredondo at Maxine’s I like her straightaway. She’s wearing the cut I want: an edgier version of a bob, tussled and effortless with long bangs. Almost intuitively, she gets what I’m looking for, and sets to work cutting a shag into my existing bob. It turns out Patricia is known for her signature square shag cut. I’m in luck.

"Nothing is curved or rounded anymore", Patricia explains as she slices into my rounded, nicey-nice bob.  She cuts at sweeping 90 degree angles, first a square shape and then layers of texture within, all with geometrical angles and disconnection.

After Patricia puts her scissors down, and the blow dryer whirling subsides, I look head-on at my reflection and am honestly…. stoked. Gone is the cute, saccharin-sweet flavor, and in its place is an edgier, more sophisticated version of me. Angled layers frame my face, the bangs are blunt but long. It’s low maintenance, a little messy and super hot.

The next day at Starbucks a woman leans over and asks, “Excuse me, I love your hair cut. Who did it?” I grin. Definitely a cure for the January blues and a hot new trend to try that looks good on any face shape.
